The 2004 Volkswagen Passat sedan and wagon are now available as TDI direct injection diesel models in the U.S. market. Both models are distinguished by EPA highway fuel economy ratings of 38 mpg and city ratings of 27 mpg which, when combined with their 16.4 gallon fuel tanks, provide a class-leading driving range of 623 miles. The Passats turbocharged 2.0-liter TDI engine delivers 134 horsepower at 4,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 247 lbs.-ft. at a modest 1900 rpm. This engines smooth and efficient performance is largely due to unit injectors located at each cylinder and exacting electronic control, which combine to create very high fuel pressure, better atomization, and precise fuel metering for more complete combustion. The result is increased engine efficiency and power along with quieter operation and higher fuel economy.
